OGD

Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy. An investigation, performed as a day case, which looks at the inside of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. The patient is sedated and swallows a small camera, an endoscope, through which Professor Bailey can see any abnormalities or problems. It is also possible to take a biopsy if he finds anything that needs further investigation. A routine test for Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria which can be a cause of stomach ulcers, is also taken at the time and, if positive, the patient is treated with a special combination of antibiotics.

If you are at all unsure about what your operation means, please do contact Professor Bailey.
